Utilizing wind power energy
Written by alternativeenergy on April 18, 2009 – 10:30 am -
With the imminent fuel crisis and resultant constant price hikes in electricity bills there has never been a better time to harness wind power energy. The cost of investing in wind power energy is very attractive as a form of electricity generation when compared to other generation systems.
In fact many people forget that the concept of using wind turbines is not a new one. Windmills have been around for a long time and people have benefited from using wind energy for many years before it became an eco friendly way to generate electricity.

Which areas are suitable for wind power energy.
For wind power energy to be considered, an assessment needs to be carried out to ensure the location is suitable. To have a successful wind farm as areas with wind turbines are called, a steady and reliable source of wind is needed. Not all areas benefit from windy conditions. For this reason a wind farm is best built in a coastal area, on rounded hills, in mountainous areas, and open plains.

For ease of your reference I have compiled the pros and cons of solar energy in easily digestible list form.
Pros of solar energy.
· One of the biggest advantages of solar energy over all other energy sources is that is a free natural endless commodity.
- Although the initial outlay for your solar energy system may be expensive, dependant on rating generally the payback period is relatively short.
- Solar energy is totally environmentally friendly unlike pollution-laden fossil fuels, so helps to protect the environment from harmful pollutant gases.
- Solar energy is totally natural so never incurs tariff or tax increases. In fact government grants are available in some areas for fitment of solar energy systems.
- If your solar energy production rate is greater than your usage, utility companies will provide credits for your surplus energy
- Solar power is not reliant in any shape or form with power grid supplies so power failures and power cuts are a thing of the past.
- Solar power is available in all areas no matter how remote, providing support for communities.
- Solar systems are on the whole maintenance free and give many years of service read more

Advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy.
Written by alternativeenergy on February 6, 2009 – 4:17 pm -Advantages and Disadvantages of Nuclear Energy

When looking at the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy it is clear to see that there is a balanced argument for and against. Nuclear energy is generated in vast quantities through a process of nuclear fission, which involves splitting of a heavy atoms nucleus. Just to put this nuclear energy release into perspective on an atom to atom basis compared to fossil fuel nearly 10 million more times energy is released.
To evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy I will provide the information in list form for ease of reading.
Advantages of Nuclear Energy
- One of the big advantages of nuclear energy stations is that they are clean in operation and do not produce the ozone damaging gases like carbon dioxide and smoke
- Uranium, which is used at the heart of the nuclear process, is relatively cheap to mine and world reserves are vast.
- In the nuclear process vast amounts of energy are produced from very little feedstock.
- Nuclear power costs when compared to coal are very similar.
- Another one of the major advantages of nuclear energy is the fact that the amount of waste produced is small.
- The nuclear energy generation system is very reliable.
- One of the final advantages of nuclear energy is the fact that the fuel used Uranium is very compact therefore saving on transportation costs.
To balance our argument on the advantages and disadvantages lets take a look at the disadvantages of nuclear power read more
